Henry M. Leland gründete 1917 die Lincoln Motor Company zusammen mit seinem Sohn Wilfried. Leland benannte das Unternehmen nach Abraham Lincoln, dem 16. Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Zunächst stellte die Marke Lincoln Flugzeugmotoren her (Liberty L8 und L12), die in amerikanische Flugzeuge im Ersten Weltkrieg eingebaut wurden.
Nach dem Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs wurden die Fabrikationsstätten für die Produktion von Luxusautomobilen des Lincoln Modell L vorbereitet, die schließlich 1920 auf den Markt kamen. In dieser Umstellungsphase geriet das Unternehmen mehrmals in erhebliche finanzielle Schwierigkeiten. Schließlich verkaufte Leland 1922 seine Anteile an die Ford Motor Company.
Dieses Geschäft war ein persönlicher Triumph für Henry Ford, der bereits an Lelands erstem Unternehmen beteiligt war, das 1909 als Cadillac Automobile Company an General Motors verkauft wurde, ohne dass Ford hier zum Zuge hätte kommen können. Ford brachte neben dringend benötigtem Investitionskapital auch seine Mercury-Division in das Geschäft ein.
Daraus entstand die Lincoln-Mercury Division als Luxussparte des Ford-Konzerns. Schnell entwickelte sich Lincoln neben Cadillac und Duesenberg zu einem starken Mitbewerber um das Marktsegment für Luxusautomobile. Bekannteste Modellreihen der Marke Lincoln sind die Lincoln Continental Limousinen, die Continental Coupés der Mark Serie, sowie das Town Car.
